Who keeps this site

The Chronicles is kept by one person in Hội An, Việt Nam, who decides what is collected here and is therefore the data controller for everything on this page. Questions, requests and complaints go to toiyeuvietnam@msn.com.

What is measured when you read

Every page loads Google Analytics 4 (property G-3HG7L0L0WY) from Google's servers. It writes two cookies to your browser, _ga and _ga_ followed by the property code, both lasting two years, and it tells Google which page you opened, which page sent you here, your language, screen size, browser and device type, and an approximate location worked out from your IP address.

Google does not show us your IP address and we cannot tell who you are. What we read is counts: which entries are opened, which are ignored, whether the Vietnamese edition or the English one is doing the work. Google processes this outside Việt Nam, including in the United States, under its own privacy policy.

For readers in the EU and the UK, the legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing whether the archive is read at all (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). None of it is used for advertising, and the measurement is configured not to feed Google's advertising signals.

What the server counts

Search-engine crawlers and AI agents do not run JavaScript, so they are counted at the edge instead: the path requested, the crawler's name read from its user-agent string, and the country the request came from. That counter never runs for a human reader — it looks at the user-agent first and stops there.

Hosting and fonts

The site is served by Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare receives your IP address, as any web server must, in order to deliver the page; see Cloudflare's privacy policy.

The type is loaded from Google Fonts, so opening a page also sends your IP address and browser details to Google's font servers. Those requests set no cookies; Google describes them here.

What is not here

No accounts, no login, no comments, no search box, no forms, no advertising, no tracking pixel beyond the one measurement above, nothing sold or handed to a data broker. The archive is static HTML: it has nowhere to keep your data even if it wanted to.

If you write to us

Send a photograph, a document or a correction and we keep your message and its attachments, because that is the record of where a source came from. Terms — permission to publish, credit, anonymity — are settled with you by email and never assumed. Ask us to delete your message and we delete it.

How long any of it is kept

Google deletes the event-level analytics data after the retention window set on the property; the aggregated day-by-day counts stay in Google's reports. Cloudflare's request logs follow Cloudflare's own retention. Email is kept as long as the entry built from it stands.

How to switch the measurement off

Block cookies for this site in your browser, or install Google's opt-out add-on, and the analytics stops seeing you.

Turning JavaScript off works too, and costs you nothing: every word of every entry is already in the HTML, which is the reason this archive was built the way it was. The measurement is the only thing that disappears.

Your rights

In the EU and the UK you can ask for a copy of your data, its correction or its deletion, and you can object to the measurement; in Việt Nam, Decree 13/2023/ND-CP gives you equivalent rights. Write to toiyeuvietnam@msn.com. Because the analytics data carries no name, we usually cannot connect a record to a person, so the honest answer to most requests is the paragraph above. You can also complain to the data protection authority in your country.

When this notice changes

If it changes, the date under the title changes with it. The page you are reading is the notice in force; there is no older version kept elsewhere.
